Struck By Lightning Nails

Hi there! I have a really cool design for you today! It's one of my favorites that I've ever done! :) It's based on the movie/book Struck by Lightning by Chris Colfer. If you haven't seen the movie, it's incredible. Do yourself a favor and watch it. It's a lovely film, and the book is just as amazing. Chris Colfer is probably one of the most talented men of our time, and I'm always eager to support him. So I painted my nails, inspired by his wonderful book!

Woo! I love these so much. I think I did a pretty good job of getting the images from the book and the movie right. :) Dare I even say they're pretty cute as a back to school design? Ha!

Thumb: Sinful Colors Snow Me White (base color), Sinful Colors Soul Mate (pink stripe on the side), China Glaze Secret Peri-Wink-le (blue horizontal stripes), Sally Hansen Mello Yellow (lightning), and black acrylic paint for the words.
Index: Sally Hansen Mello Yellow (base), Sally Hansen Celeb City (silver stripe), Sinful Colors Soul Mate (eraser tip), and black acrylic paint.
Middle: China Glaze Starboard (base), and white acrylic paint.
Ring: China Glaze Bahamian Escape (base), Sally Hansen Mello Yellow (lightning), and white acrylic paint.
Pinky: China Glaze Secret Peri-Wink-le (base) and black acrylic paint.
Topcoats: Seche Vite (glossy) and Essie Matte About You (matte)

I hope you like them as much as I do! I also hope you check out Struck By Lightning and the book that goes with it, because Chris Colfer deserves it and his work truly is incredible. Thanks so much for reading, have a great day, and happy painting! :)

31 Day Nail Art Challenge! Day 23: Inspired by a Movie

Heeeey! So for this challenge, I’m actually using the nails I wore when I went to see Thor: The Dark World. That’s inspired by a movie, right? J So this design, in my opinion, is not the most original Thor nails. And it’s not necessarily designed for Thor: The Dark World either. They’re just Thor and Loki nails, because I enjoy them both more than you would believe. So let’s get into it!

On my left hand I painted Loki because he’s my favorite. Don’t get me wrong, I like Thor a lot, but Loki’s such a good character and I am absolutely fascinated by his amorality. So on my thumb (not pictured here, but you can see it later on in the post) and ring finger, I painted two coats of Essie Good as Gold. On my index, middle, and pinky fingers, I painted three thin coats of Sinful Colors San Francisco. It’s such a lovely color, but so, so sheer. Then on my thumb, I painted “Loki” with San Francisco. On my ring finger, I painted a coat of a fine gold glitter (a random striper polish), but I think this design would look much better with some chunky gold glitter. I don’t have any. L And just because I wanted to keep the design simple, I painted Loki’s helmet on my middle finger with Good as Gold and some black paint with a tiny baby paintbrush. It’s adorable. And then I moved on to Thor!

On my right hand, I wanted to match my Thor nails to the style I painted Loki with, so on my thumb (again, not pictured, but you'll see it I promise), I painted two coats of Wet n' Wild Burgundy Frost. Then on my index, middle, and pinky fingers, I painted two coats of Wet n' Wild Denim Chrome. And on my ring finger, I painted two coats of Sally Hansen Celeb City and one coat of Essie Set in Stones. And for the designs - on my thumb I painted "Thor" with Celeb City and on my middle finger, I painted Mjölnir (or you could say Mew-Mew like Darcy in the movie) with Celeb City, Burgundy Frost and some black paint.

And here's what they look like together!

There's those pesky thumbs!

So I hope you like them! I actually wore these to the movie premier, but I never posted them. But they fit the challenge perfectly, so hope was not lost and I finally got to show them to you. So let me know what you think, I'd love to hear from you!

Thanks for reading, have a great day, and happy painting! :)

31 Day Nail Art Challenge! Day 20: Water Marble

Yes, I'm still doing this challenge. I'm so over it, haha. But I'm going to finish it! Anyway, I thought this day's challenge was going to be the most difficult for me, and I was right. I am AWFUL at water marbling. Just awful. It never works out, and I just end up wasting a lot of polish. But I did eventually get the polishes I chose to work, and I actually have two designs for you! My sister also wanted a water marble, and it was just a pain in the butt. At least it was pretty!

My sisters nails - I started with a base color of Sally Hansen Lava, and then I water marbled with Lava and Sally Hansen Pacific Blue.

Pardon the little cut on my cuticle in this picture, I got a little happy with the cuticle nippers! And also pardon the old water mark - these pictures were taken and edited like three months ago, haha.

On my thumb and ring finger, I painted one coat of Fresh Paint Nebula, and then I covered it with a coat of Sinful Colors Scene Stealer. Wearing a glitter accent is a nifty little trick to avoid having to water marble on those two fingers, haha. And on my index, middle, and pinky fingers, I started with a base coat of China Glaze Pink-ie Promise. Then I marbled with Pink-ie Promise, China Glaze Life is Rosy, and Fresh Paint Nebula. Unfortunately for me, Nebula didn't marble as well on my nails as it did in my test swatches. So... It looks kind of wonky. But I liked it! My water marble had character. So I hope you like it! Let me know what you think of it.

Thanks for reading, have a great day, and happy painting!

Halloween Ghostie Nails!

Hi there! So now I'm finally getting into my Halloween nail designs (unless you count the princess nails, because that would be the start then). I'm going to have quite a few, I hope, but I somehow managed to get a late start on them. I just couldn't decide on what I wanted to do. But then a little voice in the back of my head spoke to me... "Paint ghosties.... paaaiiinnnttt ghooooossttiiiiieeeessssss~"

These were so much fun, even though they took me forever to paint. I started with a base coat of Sally Hansen Black Out on my thumb, index, middle, and pinky fingers, and then I did one coat of Orly Green Flakie Top Coat (yes, that's the name of it. Not very creative, Orly) over the black, which gave it just a little bit of pizazz under the ghosts. It's a combination of blue and purple flakie glitters, perfect for a Halloween design. On my ring finger, I did two coats of Sally Hansen White On. Then I painted the ghosts with white and black acrylic paint. Oh, and did I mention these babies GLOW??

Super rad, right? I used glow-in-the-dark acrylic paint for a single ghost on each nail, with the exception of my ring finger, which just needed to completely glow. So I hope you like them! Of course, you can try this design a bunch of different ways. You could paint all your nails black (with optional flakie topcoat, because I know not everyone is going to have it) and just have the swirly ghosties, or you could have the "evil" ghost face (because lesbehonest, he's not very evil) on your accent nails. You could also have all the ghosts be glow-in-the-dark! They looked way cooler, because the paint was transparent and you could see the flakie colors underneath them. Let me know if you try them out. Also, if you have any requests for Halloween designs, tell me! I'll be glad to try things out. :)

Thanks so much for reading, have a great day, and happy painting! :)

31 Day Nail Art Challenge! Day 18: Half Moons

Hello there! I'm going to keep it short and sweet today - It's half moon time!

I started with a base coat of Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Petal Pusher (what a mouthful) and then did two coats of Orly Déjà Vu. Looking back on it, it might have worked better if I did two coats of Petal Pusher and one coat of Déjà Vu. But oh well. Then I thinned out China Glaze First Mate and free-handed the half moons with my teeny tiny paint brush. It was not as difficult as I thought it would be, but it would probably be easier if I had used a guide or a hole protector. Regardless, the blue shimmer in Déjà Vu went really well with First Mate. So I hope you like them! It's not anything crazy, just something simple for this challenge. Thanks for reading, have a great day, and happy painting. :)

Turquoise and Silver Glitter Nails

Hey there! This is going to be an exciting post. So, sometimes I like to just have plain nails (as close to plain as I can get, anyway), and this is what I ended up with:

(natural light, indoors)

This is a pretty normal design for me, but it was nice. The combination of a creme color and a glitter polish as an accent nail can be used for any colors you want. I, of course, used a turquoise and silver glitter. The turquoise is China Glaze For Audrey (it's a really popular polish - but my bottle's formula is gross and goopy, so I don't use it often). And for the silver glitter, I used a base coat of Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Celeb City and then one coat of Essie Set In Stones. I feel like this also would have looked very nice without the glitter, but I needed a little bit of glam.

I reeeeaally liked this manicure, but then something happened. I was pulling my windows down, and one of my nails broke completely down to the skin. Needless to say, it hurt like rip. I had class early that morning, so I had no choice but to pack my nail clippers and a file in my bag and go hide out in the bathroom (really, I went and hid in a stall - it was so weird and I felt sceezy afterwards) to even them out. I didn't take a picture of the nail difference with just that broken nail (because I was in a bathroom stall and it was already weird enough), but I do have these:

(indoors, taken the night before)

(indoors, taken when I got home and repainted my nails)

(Other than the size of my nails, you can also see a huge difference in my cuticles - they're not as gross any more!)

So there you go, it also works on short nails! And I actually found I was waaaay happier with it on my shorter nails. I don't know why. But you can do it no matter what size your nails are. :) So I hope you enjoyed it, even though it's not that special. I liked it!
Thanks for reading, have a nice day, and happy painting! :)

Sonnetarium Samurai Princess Nails

Hello! I don't know about you, but I am ready to be caught up with these posts!

Anyway, I have another super special amazing swatch for you! It's Sonnetarium's Samurai Princess. The prettiest of all the pretty glitters. I don't have a picture of the bottle itself, so I'll just jump right in to what I wore it over.

(indoors)

Samurai Princess is so freaking awesome. You can wear it over any color and it just gives it a fantastic effect. I tried to get a close-up of one nail, but it wasn't successful. This was my first time wearing it since I bought it, so it was really hard to decide what colors to use it over. I knew I wanted a gradient, but I don't have very many colors that just look absolutely great together. I ended up using L'Oréal Now You Sea Me (the teal) and Sally Hansen Pacific Blue (the bright blue) - they don't really go together either, haha! But I liked it well enough! Here is what they looked like without the coat of Samurai Princess:

(indoors)

I did have to use a couple of coats to get it that opaque and graduated. I don't really know what color scheme I was going for, I just knew I wanted some blues and greens. But afterwards, I did find myself wishing I had just painted them Pacific Blue, because it and Samurai Princess really complemented each other and Now You Sea Me was just kind of out of place.

As for the formula of Samurai Princess and where you can get it: The formula is fantastic. As I mentioned earlier, I'm wearing one coat in these swatches and it has a crazy amount of coverage without being thick. It's so lovely. It looks like paint splatters! It's really unique and looks good over any color (save maybe black and white) - I would suggest wearing it over neon colors. It only makes them look even more amazing. If you like Samurai Princess and want to buy it, you can get it from Sonnetarium's website. The 9mL bottle costs $6, the 15mL bottle is $8.50. I bought Samurai Princess with my own money and am in no way being compensated for this review. My opinions are honest - this glitter polish is amazing and I would recommend it to everyone! So if you love it as much as I do, go and support Sonnetarium! :)

As always, thanks for reading, have a nice day, and happy painting! :)

Valentines Day Nails #1

Hello! Yes, I'm aware it is well after Valentines Day. But I did paint my nails to celebrate (Singles Awareness Day, that is), so I'll share it with you anyway:

(indoors, natural lighting - with my newly fixed camera)

(indoors under a lamp with my iPhone - before my camera was fixed)

This was such a cute design. I wish the stamp had come out better, but oh well. They looked really nice and sleek if you didn't look too closely at them, haha. For this design, I used MASH plate 38. My base color was Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Petal Pusher, my go-to nude color. The color I used for the stamp was  China Glaze Ahoy!, one of my favorite pinks, if not my absolute favorite. I don't really like pink all that much, but Ahoy! is so beautiful. It has a gold shimmer in it that's very subtle, but perfect in every way. I used it again for another Valentines Day design, so I'll be posting pictures of it again later!

So thanks for reading, have a good day, and happy painting! :)

Warm Bodies Nails

Hello again! Still updating all those posts that I meant to keep up with. This one is really late, because I painted these for the premier of the movie Warm Bodies when it came out on February 1st. Clearly it was a while ago, but I'm still going to post it. I didn't intend to make this a tutorial, but I took pictures (really bad pictures) for each step, so I guess I'll just go ahead and explain how I did this:

I designed it to look like R from Warm Bodies. I think they turned out pretty nice up close, but they're a little hard to tell what they are from far away. But they were still fun to paint, and pretty easy by my standards!

Here are the polishes I used:

From left to right: Seche Clear base coat, China Glaze Starboard, China Glaze Secret Peri-Wink-le, Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Petal Pusher, Ulta Concrete Evidence, Wet n' Wild Wild Shine Red Red, e.l.f. Smoky Brown, e.l.f. Black, and Seche Vite topcoat. And if you look closely enough, you can see one of my unfinished paintings in the background. Yay!

First Step (and again, I apologize for the quality of these pictures):

First, add a base coat. Then, using a make-up sponge (I usually pull off a small piece of a larger sponge and use tweezers to grab it), dip/paint some green nail polish on to the sponge and then dab it LIGHTLY on to your nails in random spots. When I say lightly, I mean lightly. You don't want it to over power your other polishes, you just want enough on there to balance the red in your nails. In other words, it makes them look less alive.

Second Step:

Repeat exactly what you did with the green polish now with the blue. You can use whatever blue polish you want, but I definitely suggest using one that has some grey in it. It makes the "skin" part look bruised and even more washed out. You wouldn't want vibrant splotches of blue on a design that's supposed to look dead. And again, make sure you use a light hand with this. It's important for the next part.

Third Step:

Now you'll need a very sheer nude color. It needs to be sheer so it can pick up the green and blue undertones you just painted on your nails. If you don't have a sheer nude color (It needs to be close to the same color as your own skin), you may want to just forget that I told you to use a light hand with the green and blue and make the splotches more opaque. The goal of this is to change the color of the nude polish without using crazy techniques or finding a polish that is this dead color specifically. Unfortunately, you can't really tell from my photos, but the green and blue definitely came through the nude polish. And I'd just like to add that the nude is usually almost identical to my skin color, so you can see how much of a difference the green and blue make in the above picture! It's so pale and yellow now.

Fourth Step:

For this step, you'll need a light grey polish to make R's shirt. I basically just swiped it on my nail about 2/3 of the way up. I left plenty of "skin" showing, because that's an important part of this too! A great thing about this step: it doesn't need to be perfect! R is a zombie and his shirt is tattered and dirty. So you can be messy if you have trouble with things like this!

Fifth Step:

This is probably the most difficult step. It was for me, at least. If you look at photos of R close-up, you can see he has green veins in his neck, so I used the same green I used in the first step and a really small dotting tool to make random veins just above the shirt line. Unfortunately for me, they came out look like vines or some kind of vegetation rather than veins. I would suggest using maybe a tooth pick or a teeny tiny brush to make these. And possibly a sheerer green, if you have one! But I don't think you should just skip this step. It adds that last touch to the "skin."

Sixth Step:

Holy Saturation, Batman! I'm particularly sorry about this picture, the red looks crazy bright because of my camera. At least on my monitor, it does. But this is the next step! R wears a red hoodie, so I just added two quick swipes toward the top center of my nail, chevron style. Super easy! You might get your cuticles messy at this point (if you've avoided it thus far), because you really want to cover the entire tip of your nail. It is a jacket, after all.

Final Step:

This was my favorite step. Now you just get to make all your hard work look dirty! I took a dusty brown (I was afraid a regular brown would look too abrasive) and black polish and used the same make-up sponge technique from early to dab it onto the shirt and the jacket. I highly suggest using the brown more over the black, because I found that the more black I used, the more my nails looked like they had been singed in a fire. I also used a small dotting tool and the brown polish to kind of outline the neckline of the shirt because there was almost zero contrast between my grey and the skin color I had created. You may not have to do that, though! It just depends on your grey. Also very important for this step: Focus the brown and black mainly on the clothes. It's not a problem if you get a little bit of dirt on the "skin," but you don't want to cover up your veins or that nice, dead-looking skin you made. Plus, R isn't really that dirty in the movie. And the very last thing to do is just add top coat and clean up your cuticles, and tada! There you have it.

If you haven't seen Warm Bodies, go see it. It was an amazing movie, and I definitely plan on seeing it again! And if you haven't gone yet (or if you're going again, like me), maybe you could try this out! I know the movie has been out for a while, but there's still time! I hope you enjoyed this, I probably won't be doing very many tutorials, because I tend to keep my nails simple. This was a special occasion! Thanks for reading, have a good day, and happy painting! :)
